Sleep Apnea NYC

Loud Snoring

Snoring is caused by narrowing or blocking of the airway. The disruption of breathing causes the soft palate and tissues of the throat to vibrate, and the narrower the airway becomes, the louder the snoring. Loud snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea and should not be ignored. Snoring and sleep apnea occur together, making snoring treatment an important step for your health.

Snoring can often be treated by wearing a snore guard that maintains an open, unobstructed airway in the throat while you sleep. Our team will work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your sleep issues.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a patient experiences one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. In obstructive sleep apnea, patients may stop breathing multiple times throughout the night, causing oxygen levels to drop. The sleep disruption caused by sleep apnea can negatively impact your quality of sleep, leaving you tired and irritable, and experiencing fatigue and mood swings. Many adults who suffer from sleep apnea are not fully aware of the condition and may struggle to fall alsleep or stay asleep.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea can be treated with lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, breathing devices, and/or surgery. Our practice offers personalized care to treat sleep apnea and improve your overall health.

For mild sleep apnea, a custom fitted mouth piece or some lifestyle changes (weight loss, smoking cessation, clearing nasal passages to improve breathing through the nose) may be helpful. We will schedule a consultation to assess your symptoms and signs of sleep conditions.

For moderate to severe sleep apnea, a breathing device called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) may be helpful. A CPAP machine uses a mask that fits over your mouth and/or nose and gently blows air into your throat. This air pressure helps keep your airway open while you sleep, preventing you from stopping breathing and maintaining healthy oxygen levels. CPAP treatment is an effective solution for obstructive sleep apnea.

Surgically widening the breathing passages by shrinking or removing excess tissue in the mouth and throat or resetting the lower jaw, can be helpful as well. These surgical options can reduce the risk of sleep apnea complications and improve sleep quality.
