Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies

What is considered a dental emergency?

We consider it a dental emergency if you’re experiencing uncontrollable bleeding, severe pain, or you need immediate dental care in order to save a tooth or restoration.

Is a broken crown an emergency?

If your crown is broken, call our office and we can determine whether you need same-day treatment. In some cases, you may be able to wait a few days before coming to our office to have your crown replaced. You can use dental wax in the meantime to protect the remaining tooth structure. If your tooth is painful or has broken off with your crown, you’ll need to come in sooner.

Can a loose dental implant be saved?

Often when a dental implant feels loose, it’s actually the restoration attached to the dental implant (the crown, bridge, or denture) that is loose, not the implant itself. This is good news, as the restoration can be tightened in a quick, painless office visit. If, however, it is the dental implant that has become loose, we may or may not be able to save it, depending on the underlying cause. The sooner you seek treatment, the better chances we have of being able to save your original implant. If it cannot be saved, we will remove it and allow the soft tissue and bone to heal before evaluating if another implant can be placed.

What happens if a dental implant falls out?

Dental implants rarely fail and it’s even more rare for them to fall out on their own. If this does happen, call our office right away. We will want to see you immediately for treatment.

How do you fix a cracked dental bridge?

Dental bridges cannot be repaired at home, but we may be able to bond the bridge back together at our office depending on where it has fractured.

Is a veneer falling off a dental emergency?

A dental veneer falling off isn’t a dental emergency strictly speaking, but we understand you’ll want prompt treatment so you can smile without embarrassment. Call our office and we’ll see you as soon as we can. In most cases, your original veneer can simply be bonded back in place. If your veneer is damaged, we can provide you with a temporary replacement while a permanent veneer is fabricated for you.
